I just got some really good news: I don’t have to stay at my usual happiness level if I don’t want to. I have a choice.

And so do you.

Turns out we’re each born at a unique place on the happiness scale, with a general set point for happiness. Positive and desirable events, such as a promotion or falling in love, can raise our feelings of happiness for a time, but we soon go back to our set point. You know the feeling, when you return to your usual mood after you achieve point. The really good news is that Positive Psychology research shows that you can actually
influence and even change your happiness set point, and become happier over all, permanently. And the even better news is that you can make that change with just some tiny shifts.

In the study (Positivity Ratio, Fredrickson/Losada), people who made just two small shifts created a tipping point in their own wellbeing, with the result being a significant increase in creativity, resilience, health, success, energy, and motivation. We can change our positivity ratio by increasing our positive experiences and decreasing our negative ones. Sounds simple, right? Well, it is if you first take responsibility for your own experience of life, and decide to put your time and energy into what benefits you, rather than what drags you down.

You can do it! You can become a happier person.
